Nicolas and his wife Karine farm 25 hectares of vines in Corbières, not far from the Mediterranean sea in the South of France. The estate previously sold off their grapes to local negociants, but when Nicolas and Karine took over his family Domaine in 2000, they beginning a painstaking conversion to organic and biodynamic viticulture, aiming to make the kind of wines they enjoyed drinking themselves. ‘Campana’ is the Occitan word for bell, which sits above the main house, and the winery adorns the labels of their ‘house’ wines—Campana Blanc, Rouge et Rosé.
Nicolas and Karine are passionate about farming with the utmost respect for nature, having spent the last 20 years converting their vines to organic viticulture and then to biodynamics in 2018. Cover crops are used over winter, and sheep graze between the vines in summer. The vineyards face north on the Massif de Fontfroide, and vines are planted on decomposed sandstone. Fermentations are spontaneous with natural yeasts, and wines are vinified without additions. The Campana Blanc is fermented in stainless steel and bottled with light filtration and less than 35 mg sulphur.
