Producer
Owned by cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, the 28-hectare farm is based in Swartland, the appellation surrounding the Paardeberg mountain north of Cape Town. The current winery is on the farm where both cousins grew up, restoring a neglected cellar last used in the 1930s to make natural wine. Adi is the winemaker who, after completing his studies at Elsenburg, worked a few harvests at Chateau Angelus and Alain Graillot in France and Wither Hills in New Zealand. Swartland is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world, and Adi has arguably been the cornerstone of the wine revolution here.
Farming and Winemaking
The winemaking on Kalmoesfontain Farm is traditional, using older equipment, including cement and open wooded kuipes. They describe their farming as ?biological? and their wines as ?natural?. All fruit (red and white) is dealt with whole-bunch, and a long fermentation is encouraged (sometimes up to 4 months). The grapes for the Chenin Blanc come from all around the Paardeberg mountain and even include some very old plots, up to 60 years old.
