Producer
Andrea Stocco is the fourth generation winemaker at his family?s winery in the Grave region of Friuli, a magical mountainous area in Northern Italy, bordering Slovenia. Sandwiched between the Alps and the Adriatic sea with gravel soils make it a perfect region for growing wine grapes. Best known for some of Italy?s famous indigenous varietals including Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Refosco as well as ?International Varieties? like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Farming and Winemaking
The Stocco vineyards are on red soil with gravel, and these vines are planted on the bottom slopes. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel, and then moved into a pressurised tank for its long, slow, cool second fermentation, which is started using specially selected yeasts. The Glera grape variety, known simply as ?Prosecco? until 2009, is an ancient variety known since Roman times and is now the principal grape of all Prosecco. A note on ?Frizzante?- they are less fizzy than ?Spumante? sparkling wines. Frizzante has 2 bar of pressure, Vs. a minimum of 3 bar for Spumante and as much as 5 or 6 bar for Champagne.
