Castel?o, indigenous to Portugal, is the country's most widely planted grape variety. The vineyards' proximity to the coast in Alcobaca temper the climate, balancing the ripe fruit with refreshing tannins and acidity.
Producer
When Rodrigo Martins isn?t making classic Tawny Ports and wines at Quinta da Silveira in the Douro Valley, he is working on his projects with indigenous Portuguese varietals to make fun, vibrant wines under his ?Espera? label. A Deconhecida is Rodrigo?s keg project, created especially for Uncharted.
Farming and Winemaking
Rodrigo farms 5 hectares of vineyards in the Obidos and Alcobaca in Western Portugal, close to the Atlantic ocean North of Lisbon. Currently undergoing conversion to organic certification and focusing on growing local varieties ? Arinto for his whites and Castelao for his reds ? both historically considered blending grapes. Rodrigo allows them to shine on limestone soils with low yields. Hand harvested, fully destemmed and natural fermentation with indigenous yeast.
