Andrea Stocco is the fourth generation winemaker at his family?s winery in the Grave region of Friuli, a magical mountainous area in Northern Italy bordering Slovenia. It is sandwiched between the Alps and the Adriatic sea with gravel soils, making it a perfect region for growing wine grapes. Best known for some of Italy?s famous indigenous varietals, including Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Refosco, as well as ?International Varieties? like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Farming and Winemaking

The Tenuta Aurea vineyards are planted on fine gravel, which helps drainage and aids ripening. The grapes are hand-harvested quite late, and some of the juice is run off saignee-style. The wine is pumped over the must during fermentation for the deeper intensity of colour and flavour. The wine is racked into stainless steel, then a second rack into old barrique. Refosco is a very dark, thick-skinned grape native to Northern Italy - this dal Peduncolo clone is only found in Friuli. It can be tannic or ?rustic?, so Andrea strives to refine it into this elegant wine.
